0602: Red Canucks Freak Out
Friday · Oct 11 · 2013 | 8:00 AM PDT 5 Comments
Red Week wraps up with this Canucks set from Rob Coulter. He wants to see Vancouver revert back to red, black and yellow — but he likes the modern Johnny Canuck logos. Thoughts?
By the way, I hope you guys noticed that during Red Week I made a concerted effort to feature some new designers. Five of the artists featured in the last six days are first-timers. Two weeks ago I had a theme week that featured a bunch of our prolific regulars, so I figured now would be a good time to squeeze in some fresh blood. Keep all the great concepts coming!

Where's the red? These jerseys are black and white..
Two and a half stars? The uniforms are pretty good - predominantly black and white (Nets) with a little gold and red thrown in.
But the logo. THE LOGO!!! Love the upper body and the stick in the V. Best Canucks logo ever!
this.... i like. good friday entry.
When I did this, it was only the third design I'd ever done. The blue and green combination of the Canucks has always bugged me, as does the Orca logo. The Canucks got their name from, in part, Johnny Canuck, so I've always thought their logo should feature the fictional bearded lumberjack. The red is minimal, as is the gold, on purpose. Hockey sweaters -- NOT "jerseys," as a jersey is a short-sleeved sweater -- should have clean, simple designs, discernible from a distance. For those of you who liked this, thanks. For those of you who didn't ... well, you can't please everyone.
Rob Coulter.
@Rob Coulter,
Very nice work! I gave the design 5 Stars. I have always loved the black, red, and yellow of the Canucks. In fact, I LOVED the lighter home yellow of the Flying V sweaters(also, teams change in dressing rooms, NOT "locker rooms"!).
While I loved the home white/away black combo in the early-mid 90s, there were too many teams going with that look. The home yellow/away black was unique and basic in itself:
Yellow: Sunsets on English Bay and its reflection on the city skyline
Red(not orange nor orange-red): Canadian
Black: Goes well with home yellow and looks great with red.
Had the 80s Canucks used a Johnny Canuck crest similar to your concept, plus winning teams to go with the Cinderella run to the '82 Cup finals, people's fashion hearts would melt over such a look.
However, I also love the team's true and original colours: the royal blue(English Bay), kelly green(Stanley Park), and white(snow on the North Shore mountains). Navy blue with kelly green would look awesome by the way.
I am totally with you on the Orca logo 110%. It was nothing more than corporate branding by the former absentee ownership group. However, I have a strong feeling that the skating Johnny Canuck will be the primary crest within 3 to 4 years. Branding is big busine$$ and the Canucks have been focusing on anniversary brands that celebrate Vancouver's hockey history . First, it was the 40th anniversary brand from their first NHL season in 1970-71. Now, they are focusing on the centennial of the 1915 Cup-winning Millionaires, Vancouver's first and only Cup champion. Once the celebrations are over and done with, I see Johnny replacing the Orca as the club's primary brand.
Once again Rob, great work!
Cheers!
