0405: Pittsburgh Freak Out
Friday · Mar 29 · 2013 | 9:00 AM PDT 4 Comments
Revival Week wraps up on this Freak Out Friday with the old Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League. They existed from 1961 until the Penguins franchise was awarded to the city in 1967. Derek Heilmann reimagines their jerseys today as an option for the Pens.

oddly enough, if the hornets were still around, it would have been very easy to utilize the black, yellow, and white color scheme that the other pittsburgh teams use.
(i do like this design, by the way. got a nice, simple look to it.)
With all due respect, the Hornets began play in 1937 and suspended operations in 1956 when their home arena the Duquense Gardens was demolished. When the Civic Arena opened in 1961 the Hornets returned and played until 1967 when the NHL awarded Pittsburgh a franchise. The Hornets went out with a bang winning the 1967 Calder Cup.
I wonder which came first this, or the Navy's logo for the Seabees? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/Seabees.png
I think up until recently, the Pittsburgh high-school A level travel hockey team was the Hornets.
