0413: The Battle of PA

Eric Poole offers up his take on a future Winter Classic — otherwise known as the Battle of Pennsylvania — between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. Truthfully, it may work just as well outside the context of the outdoor event — just the regular season series between the two franchises. Neat logos either way.

I love these logos. Simple, yet they stand out. And it's a great concept (idea-wise), too. Maybe if Pittsburgh and Philadelphia played a home-and-home over a weekend they could use this (or perhaps a "neutral-site" preseason game?). This is one of those ideas (branding rivalry games) that I look at and say "I can't believe the NHL hasn't thought about that yet".
With the new realignment, maybe the NHL can create a "rivalry weekend" in, say, December of every year (keeping the major events evenly spread out - Opening Day in October, Rivalry Weekend in December, All-Star Game/Olympics in February, playoffs in April). Since all teams will now play each other once in each team's building, this would now be doable (in the case of teams like Detroit and Chicago being split up, I mean). "The Sunshine State Showdown" (Panthers/Lightning), "New York, New York" (Rangers/Islanders), etc.
Getting back on point, these logos are really great and could only be better if the Penguins went back to black and yellow-gold full-time.
Thanks Drew, and these logos were created with the idea you stated in my mind. These logos weren't necessarily for a Winter Classic (although they could work for it), but a 'Rivalry Logo'. I 100% agree with you, a set Rivalry Weekend would be great for the NHL, and, like you said, it amazes me that they haven't come up with it yet. I guess it's a start though with Wednesday Night Rivalry games, though!
As for the Vegas Gold/Yellow Gold debate, as a die-hard Pens fan, I kinda like the Vegas. It's more the Pens 'identity' now than the other gold. If they went back to the yellow gold, I wouldn't have an issue, though. They just have to get rid of the blue crap...ugh!
Rivalry logos - what an awesome idea! I honestly agree with Drew's sentiment on branding rivalries - how come this isn't an actual thing? Because it should be. Ducks-Kings, Rangers-Devils, Sabres-Bruins, Blues-Blackhawks - the possibilities are endless.
This is a great idea and an awesome logo! Considering that one of the major reasons for realignment was to increase natural/historical/geographical rivalries, I'm all-in on logos for them. I'm not saying that these rivalries need to have trophies like college football, but why not promote them like they're something special? One that I'm looking forward to in Minnesota is the new alignment with Winnipeg (US vs. Canada, history of having teams taken away and recently returning, cultural similarities, etc.) but it doesn't mean much without some important games to back it up!
I'd love to see what Eric can do when it comes to other "rivalry logos." This is first-rate stuff.
This is excellent. Meshing the 2 team's colors in the state of PA inside of a Keystone is just brilliant. Well done!
