0543: The WNHL Series, Part 1

Women's hockey will be the focus of the next six Wednesdays. Nick Burton presents his WNHL series, wherein he imagines a female pro hockey league and its Original Six franchises. This week we feature the Montreal Royals.

Nick writes: "Montréal Royals/Royals de Montréal — The Royals take their colour scheme from the Canadiens but darkened to make the team unique. The team name Royals is derived from the city name itself, which translates to Mount Royal."

really like the design but that maroon and blue combo is rough on us colorblind folks. :-(

That is right ? Well , if that suppose to be a concept for a women's league - it doesn't have any feminine indications on anywhere on the equipment for a presentation. In fact, this particular design looks to be made for an opposite sex starting from a very straight cut discipline lines on a crest, overall color scheme , sleeve and hem stripe pattern up to a font. Somehow a designer should take into considerations who will wear it and how it will look on them? Speaking of the color choice in here - it is more close to West Ham United ( Hammers ) - a soccer club in London in English Premiership League but not the " Habs ". " M " in a crest copycat of the " Maroons " and a crown needs some additional work. Also, a negative space below a crown bothers me...

@Felix I don't think these need to be feminine looking. What do you want lace trim? A-line jerseys with sweet-heart necklines?
Why do we need to differentiate? Hockey is Hockey.
Personally I really like this concept and love the colour combo. One small suggestion would be to add an 'R' to the blank spot between the crown and the 'M'. Keep up the good work!

Chris, with a new road jersey coming for the Wild, I'm surprised you didn't go with "Wild Wednesdays" until it is unveiled. :p Anyway, I think the Women's Hockey idea is a breath of fresh air and this design has given these six Wednesdays coming up a very good start. I love the logo and I'm really impressed with how you used the Habs look but with a darker red and different striping. Great job.

@Felix

Why does there need to be any feminine indications on the equipment? A quick Google search shows that quite a bit of female hockey teams have zero feminine indications

Felix, what constitutes "feminine indications" on the uniform? Just because it is a female hockey league does not mean that every team should be on the ice with pink jerseys and butterflies on their uniforms. In today's equality driven world, what a man wears is equally appropriate for what a women will wear.

R: Not a bad idea, but I actually haven't seen that many Wild concepts come my way lately. But if I do start to, maybe a few Minnesota Mondays might be in order?

I'm shocked you haven't had many "Wild" concepts with a new jersey coming out. You have Seattle Sundays, and Women's Wednesdays. I think Minny Mondays would be a fantastic idea.

Guess people aren't aware of the pro women's league.... CWHL's Montreal Stars.... Would love to see people make some concepts because I'm not a big fan of the jerseys for most of the teams.

"The team name Royals is derived from the city name itself, which translates to Mount Royal." -

So, they're the Mount Royal Royals or The Royals of Mount Royal?

Also, I'm not sure why just because this is for a women's team they have to wear a princess crown on their sweaters...
