0690: Pittsburgh Preview

The rumors have been floating around that a new third jersey is on the way in Pittsburgh. Could this retro-inspired set by Scott Dempsey be a preview of what's to come?

I like these a lot aside from the yellow shoulder yoke on the white jersey. I think if the Pens do go this route, there's a chance they'll use Vegas gold instead of the vintage yellow, especially considering that their brand new arena is covered in Vegas gold. Of course, they could be happy with the yellow on their alternate jersey, but alternates seem to become primaries lately.

Man, the home jersey is beautiful... the road jersey could use some black around the shoulder yoke, but it's still a killer uniform set. I would buy these tomorrow if the Pens were to use them - nice work!

Agree with NHLJeff; I like these, but I also believe the team will keep the Vegas gold. The Pens are on the right track with that Stadium Series jersey.
Since the rest of Pittsburgh's pro teams are decking in Black and Yellow, the Pens need a little something to stand out from the rest -- which is why I think the gold will stay. From a purely marketing point of view.
I would not mind seeing the yellow return at all.

This is a nice set, I'll accept it. Though, while I would much prefer a replica like the jerseys they've been selling lately. But...a pet peeve I have with the Pens' current "throwback" merchandise, is they got the logo all wrong. THIS is what the old skating penguin looked like. The major difference is in the eye. It kinda ticks me off that they didn't pay attention to a detail like that. Oh well.

I'd also love for the RoboPen to come back some day, as it is one of my favorite logos in all of sports history, for self-explanatory reasons. Every time a chance like this comes up, I hope they do, but...Penguins staff and fans see it usually as a bad luck charm to the team...sadly. I can always hope, though.

Now...the striping pattern seems weird. They never wore those...also, they never wore white numbers on the black jerseys from that era.

Wait a second...I know where that jersey comes from (most likely)! The erroneous throwback alternate jersey used in EA Sports' NHL 2002. The numbers and striping patterns are similar. I must ask, did he get this inspiration from this obscure jersey? The resemblance is uncanny!

I can absolutely see something like this becoming a third jersey in the near future. Anyone that has been to the PensGear store at the arena will have noticed the plethora of black and yellow merchandise available....almost as if they are testing the fans response to buying merchandise in this color scheme. Very little blue merchandise is for sale anymore, so I can see the black and yellow replacing the blue as a throwback. However I do believe that the Vegas gold color is here to stay for the team's primary identity .

These would move Pittsburgh back into the realm of aesthetic respectability (and become a top-five set in the league).

Should be the Pens home and away. Not a penguin fan but I'd own a Malkin jersey in a minute with that set.
