Winter Winding Down

As the winter winds down, there's been a lot of talk about next year's Winter Classic. Rumor has it the Washington Capitals will get to host. And by far, the most popular opponent among Icethetics readers seems to be the Ottawa Senators. That's our theme for today's post.

Tyler Allen

There's no question in my mind that the Senators need to wear something like this when they eventually get selected for the outdoor game. Tyler's done a great job with this concept.

But his Capitals jersey is more of a Frankenstein creation than anything else. It seems he's literally taken element from every past Caps uniform and injected the Weagle. It's not terrible, but I think the stars are a bit distracting. Might be different on the ice.

Drew Krause

If it's simplicity the Sens would like in a Winter Classic sweater, Tyler's may be the right look. But if it's true vintage they want, look no further than Drew's concept. I didn't like the crazy stripes when Montreal did it, but that might've been because the blue threw it off. Maybe the Sens could do it better in black.

Drew also threw in a couple of logos, including a simplified version of the old primary mark along with a new heritage mark to go with that jersey.

Mike Bell

The Caps' owner may have recently nixed plans for an actual third jersey, but that doesn't mean concept versions can't live on here at Icethetics. Rather than incorporating the Weagle, which many have done (because of its awesomeness), Mike opted for a simple color reversal. Blue jersey, red logo. Not sure about the number being on the front though. We have enough to read there as it is.

Brad McPelican

Brad went the more traditional route with his third, but the key in this concept are the home and road jerseys. Check out the stars on the shoulders! That jersey belongs on a bit marquee sign, rather than a hockey player.

And if that logo looks familiar to you, it comes from the Capitals' old primary logo from the late '90s.

Ryan Haslett

And lest we leave Canada out of the Winter Classic one more time, Ryan Haslett has put together this 2011 concept for a match-up between the Flames and Canucks in Calgary. You don't get any more classic with a Flames jersey.

However, I'm not sure it's the best idea to go with a Canucks jersey from the era in which they wore the same colors as Calgary. For the Canucks, there'd be no choice but to go back to the 1970s and the classic stick-in-rink log.

By the way, I do have a few more Olympic concepts to share. I'll try to get those posted before the weekend.

i'm absolutely in love with those Canucks colours, they pulled it off way better than the flames ever have...the flames jerseys without the black are by far their best.

I love Mike Bell's blue Caps jersey. It looks really clean and classic. Reminds me of the US Olympic jersey. That waould be awesome as a third. I agree with Chris regarding the number on the front.

In my mind, you have to do those Canuck jerseys. The stick-in-rink logo was already gone by the time the Flames were in Calgary, and isn't reliving classic moments that we'd previously seen in those uniforms part of the charm of the Winter Classic? I want to be reminded of stuff like this if I'm watching Calgary and Vancouver play a Winter Classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp5aPIRSNP4

Awesome WC logo for flames/canucks!

Brad's blue Caps jersey seems like such a no-brainer... it's the perfect 3rd for the Caps. I don't mind the idea of the eagle head on the front, but it reminds me of (of all things) the Austrian national jersey! Apparently Austria has a thing for eagles, too. I think the stars on the collar are clever, but just maybe using less of them would help. There were only, what, four total stars per sleeve on the classic Caps jersey? Bringing the number down might make it look less "marquee-esque".

I'd like to see Drew's Ottawa jersey with Tyler's Logo! That would at least approximate more closely a real jersey the Sens wore. Amazingly enough, the first jersey I've ever seen to use the "number in the box" style was the early Senators, except the box is antique white with a black number. Let me see if I can whip something up...

BTW, that's about the perfect choice for a CGY-VAN Winter Classic, right there. Those teams had their most memorable series against each other wearing those jerseys in 1994.

For the 'nucks winter classic, what if they used a old Vancouver Millionaires jersey.... The maroon one?!!

If Washington it is, they need to go back to their first uniform, including the white pants.

I don't know where Chris gets his ideas, but he's allowed to, he's from florida. they just don't make sense.

Totally agree with Bill. Even though the Canucks should have never ditched the blue and green in the first place, the black, yellow, and red was a sharp look. The Canucks' historic playoff battles with the Flames happened when they wore the hot colours. Another thing is the Canucks did not have exactly the same colours as the Flames. In the 80s, Calgary wore home white and away red with yellow trimming and Vancouver wore home yellow and away black with reddish-orange trimming. Similiar colour schemes, but still different. If only the Canucks didn't lose so much back then and didn't have the garish Double V designs, those uniforms would have looked as classy as the Flames unis.

Definitely a fan of the flames and canucks winter classic, think the jerseys look great!
Also i am a huge fan of the sens going back to the profile of the logo, and i really like Drew's touch on it for the most part!
I have been thinking of doing some senators stuff of my own some time soon.. bringing back the old black and red jersey.

i think the winter classic logo for dc (if its there) will include the capitol building and the washington monument (with something from nationals park in the logo too).

If it is indeed fact that Vancouver will play Calgary in the next winter classic. Vancouver will dawn a new jersey, which will be instated as their third jersey, as the current one will be our home. for sure. My guess on what it is, is up for grabs, but i am 90% sure it will have alot of green and blue.

For a Flames/ canucks winter classic you have to do the skate logo for the canuck reliving the playoff battles of 1989 and 1994.

This is the series they need to get the uniforms from for the Flames and Canucks for WC (if they ever do it). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQiJa_w40-w&feature=related One of the best playoff series EVER.

the stick in rink jersey has been used so much, in a way or another, in the last couple of years that it won't even look "classic" so i think that the black jersey will be better for a classic match against the flames.. it would be cool if the flames use the old atlanta logo though

That Senators logo & jersey are pretty cool. I wouldn't want to see that jersey on every night, but it would serve it's purpose for an outdoor game. Love the logo design, Sens need to go back to a 2d logo. The vintage Canucks jersey would be fun to see one more time as well.
