Collection 13: Changing Their Stripes

Tough crowd these days. You guys are getting hard to please. In any case, today's theme post features the Ottawa Senators, who recently announced their intentions to launch a new "heritage" third jersey to mark their 20th anniversary season. Our concept artists have shared some of their ideas.

If I were the Sens, I'd move away from the Black/Red/Tan - they'll look too much like the Blackhawks alts

The Fischer concept is gorgeous... that is a great looking jersey.

I'm not sure about this trend to that old fashioned white. It seems like its going to be the new blue in the NHL. Colin May's concept is the best by far.

Fischer concept is beautiful

i agree the washed-out white was a good look but it seems to be a bit much. maybe because im looking at all of them nxt to each other.

even thoough i hate the sens, if they used the fischer jersey, i would buy it

Mar 6 · 11:58 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterawesomekid

I was just going to rank the jerseys, but skip that. Fischer's is by far the best.

Mar 6 · 12:02 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterChicagolander

Fischer's is pretty nice, but when did the Senators adopt maroon? With the vintage white/sand color, it looks more appropriate for the Phoenix Coyotes, than Ottawa. Sub in Ivall's or May's coloring and that'd really look right.

Still think Barrette's is the one to beat though.

Dallas' concept is my favourite.

If the Sens came out with those (probably the black one), I'd buy one immediately. I like the white one more, however.

Whatever the Alternate ends up looking like, I can't wait to see it.

thats a VERY good collection of concepts!!
overall if the sens wanted 3 new jerseys, then the best by far is Andrw Lorties, i'd buy all 3!!
however, if its a 'heritage' style jersey the sens want, then i like tex fischer's the best (just needs to fix the maroon/red), mike ivall's is also very good, i like the sleeves a lot, not sure about the red/white/black bits down the side of the body or the mini senator head tho.....

the first one is spot on

Mar 6 · 2:30 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterst4rr

see now THESE are all really good. no, they're not all workable as a jersey, but at least they're actually new and original. I can't say anything bad about any of them. My favorite is the text concept...i'd love to see a white version

Mar 6 · 3:14 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterfeenixx

If I was Melnyk, after I drafted Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1st overall,Id hand him one of the Tex Fischer jerseys then unveil Andrew Lortie's designs as the home and away jerseys. (black and white,no need for a red here)

I am intrigued by what Mike has done with the 2 logos on the front of his jersey, especially the placement of the second logo on the bottom corner. Interesting. I think there is potential with that idea.

Mar 6 · 5:05 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterColin

The Fischer concept is beautiful. I'd buy that in a second.

Regarding the Lortie set: The white jersey is fine. I'm not a big fan of the logo, but the jersey is good. The black jersey shouldn't have gold accents though. Gold next to white and red just doesn't look that good, I think it lacks contrast and doesn't add anything.

I love Tex's concept. Actually my favourite part is the barberpole pattern in the neck insert where the NHL logo is.

Mar 6 · 8:20 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterrhas2916

Great sets! However, I still believe the best Senators jersey set was the post from Jan. 24th that Mike Ivall sent in.

Mar 6 · 8:52 PM PST | Unregistered Commentertyrone2k

The "O" is great, because I despise that Roman-head logo. It looks like it was drawn by a nerdy twelve-year-old. Put a silhouette of the Canadian Parliament Building on the shoulder instead. Or a canoe, anything but that head.

Mar 7 · 5:58 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterpuckbite.com

I don't find any of these all that appealing.

Mar 7 · 11:10 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterMark

dunno why airyone is praising texs' not that good. its ok, but not as good as everyone is making it sound. the number color on the back should match the logo on front

Mar 7 · 12:41 PM PST | Unregistered Commenternaz naz

Dallas' and Tex's concepts are great, except for the "vintage cream". I'd vote highly on them if they had proper white, but I just can't abide by the "deliberately make it look ancient" aesthetic. Using "cream" on a genuine throwback design is one thing; if it's a new, original design, though, the fauxback effect is just made worse by the "cream", at least in my eyes.

Mike's is good; it's got a touch of the 67's with the sleeve stripes. Colin's is a good start, but could be refined - I for one wouldn't use black as the primary number color on a black jersey. And Andrew, of course, gives us nice designs calling back the modern team's beginnings, but with a little more gold accenting for a pleasing effect.

I really enjoy this whole collection but the Dallas Hicks set is beautiful. My favorite for sure.

Mar 7 · 1:18 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterdp.kerr63

@ peter duggan

after i draft GABRIEL LANDESKOG i would hand him one of those awesome fischer jerseys and then introduce the great red and white lortie jerseys as primaries, but after that i would take it a step further. I would hold a ceremonial bonfire of every single current jersey (third included) soaked in gasoline. after that, i would take the ashes, soak them in more gasoline, and repeat. then to finish off the worst jerseys in history, i would dump the twice burned ashes in a sewer.

Mar 7 · 5:44 PM PST | Unregistered Commentergogsensgo

@rhas2916
Good point! That is a great touch that I didn't notice the first time. Love it!!!

I have a feeling that all of these awesome concepts are simply getting my hopes up... and that the Senators will ultimately disappoint, again.
Someone should email Cyril Leeder a link for icethetics, just in case he needs some inspiration ;)

To be honest I don't find the possible =O= jersey cool or desirable. It is simple yes, it is better than the horrid SNES jersey, but it still looks like crap and this is probably because of the reebok threads... Designers are so limited by it its terrible. Sens wanna go back to black? Try using the original black jersey from your roots. Not the old sens, that is not the current team and ditch the 3D logo, your first jersey back in the 90's was by far the best.

Mar 7 · 9:29 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterReadBetweenTheLines

Fischer's concept wins hands down. I would like to see a round collar on it however.

Why does Mike Ivall always get top billing? I don't think his concepts are all that great. His Sen's concept is definitely not good. It's busy and too similar to the 67's jersey.

Mar 8 · 12:07 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterel

EL Does it really matter who gets on top? your all voting and commenting on your favorite. I would not matter to me if i was on the bottom. It would not stop people from saying mine may be the better or worse on whatever concept it is. I think i was just the first to send it in. Just enjoy it! By the way Tex Love your jersey as well.

Mar 8 · 4:12 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMike Ivall

Mike, Tex and Andrew all have my votes. There's just something about those designs that appeal to me.

Mar 9 · 9:00 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJason

I would buy the Fisher & Alfie jerseys with the 2D logo in a heartbeat..

Mar 12 · 11:46 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDoolox

Only one I really like is the one by Tex, the colors and striping all work very well together. Great work!
