Collection 14: Tex on a Tear

Thought this was a fun story. A lot of readers send in concept art and I love it when someone new comes along because it usually means a new perspective. Somewhat surprisingly, newcomer Tex Fischer was a huge hit with his Senators concept on Sunday. Not to offend, but I'm not sure why it was such a standout considering the entire group was made up of variations on a theme. Regardless, it was a hit. And Tex has been on a tear since. Today's post is dedicated to him.

That last one should serve as the segue into our next set of concepts. I put out the word for Winnipeg Jets concepts this week and have already gotten a lot of excellent entries. Looking forward to sharing them.

Bruins:Love the BROWN jersey! (I would like to see a version without vintage white, though)

Flames: interesting take, I'm not sure that a dark red is the way to go with the flames (the current shade of red seems to have struck a chord in calgary, and is a real big part of the flames identity) , but I do like the predominantly white crest (why did they ever switch to black?). Also the flames need to do away with the flag shoulder patches. They are not Alberta's team, nor are they Canada's team. Plus the flames had an awesome secondary mark (the horse) which would look great on their shoulders IMO.

Blackhawks: I do like the muted color scheme here (IMO chicago is the only team that is working the vintage white properly, take a look at their alternate sweaters) nice to see Chicago's vintage logo stand-alone, without that wide stripe behind it.

Isles: solid use of the wordmark. also the stripe detail on the collar is awesome...those 4 stripes have a lot of meaning to them. why go with 5 elsewhere on the jersey?

Jets: It just looks great seeing shane doan's last name on a jets sweater again... Solid edgification of a classic sweater.

I never thought about putting 4 stripes on the Isles jersey, now that you mention it, I wish I had.
I really like the color of their HC sweaters, so I just tried it out.

I still like the Sens one the best. The Flames one is interesting - I wouldn't pick it as a jersey they should use but it's still nice to test the limits with concepts like this. I'd love to see some folks try a red Flames jersey with a red C, or some other colour than black and white.

Is it just me or are the patterns for the Flames concept the same as the one used for the Hawks concept? They jerseys look great despite the fact that I really love the current Flames color scheme and a change would crush me...

@tex

I didn't pick up on the HC motif with the flames at first, but I understand where you are coming from now.
I am really enjoying your work, keep it up!

I think he's such a hit because he uses such a great palate of colors...subdued, but powerful. Uses the wheat color very well, and the darker reds in the calgary and chicago concepts have a really nice retro but contemporary feel. I don't know about the islanders script on the chest, but otherwise a great sweater. I like the strong blue with less use of the orange.

@ DP .KERR63

No, they're not exactly the same, they're the same in one regard (consistent throughout the stripes.) The Flames one is narrower by one pixel, I think. I didn't intend them to be same.

Its looking like Winnipeg will be back in the not so distant future... keep those Jet jerseys coming. Nice conservative look

More good entries by Tex, though his Senators jersey is still the best one. Also, really looking forward to all the Jets concepts coming.

@tex
Thanks. I didn't mean to be critical if it came out that way, just the fact that they were one after another made them look similar...

Mar 9 · 1:27 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterdp.kerr63

These are beautiful, all of them. They are perhaps a bit similar, but you can still see that an effort has been made in each case. If I had to choose a favourite it would be Boston. They should definitely go with brown as their main color as their name implies. This does remind me though, Calgary really need to get rid of the flags on the shoulders. It doesn't look good and it's ridiculous, since they aren't even the only team in Alberta. And if anyone is going to have a Canadian flag on their uniform it's going to be the Canucks or the Canadiens.

Brown would make for a good alternate for the Bruins. All the jerseys here are basically the same and the subdued collies work for one or two teams. Not doing it for me.

I am so happy to hear so many like my concepts, thank you all for the nice comments.

*Colours. Damn iPhone.

seriously,Tex,youve got some good ideas. At the very least I would hope that some CHL owner sees this and gives you a shot at re-designing a major junior team's kit to start. Youve got some mad skillz my friend!!!

@ Peter Duggan

Thank you, that is the greatest compliment I have ever recieved, I'm only 14, so I doubt i'd get an opportunity to do so. But that would be awesome!

Mar 9 · 6:09 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterTex

How do you even make a concept what program do you need ?

Mar 9 · 6:53 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJordan

I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the standard Edge template for doing concepts. I find it doesn't rive you a very accurate feel for what a jersey will look like in real life. One of the reasons I like Jacob Barrette's Sens jersey submission is you really get an idea of what the finished product would look like.

Mar 10 · 6:30 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJohn D

Not hating or anything, but all the jerseys up there have the exact same template, just different colors and logos...

All with the stripes on the sleeves and bottom of the jersey... Are you limited to this design, or can you spice it up with different striping?

Mar 10 · 11:43 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterMatt

I'm kinda limited with the striping, cause the only template in this style is the shoulder yolks and the armbands. I also like simple striping, but if you have any suggestions, I open to them.

Mar 10 · 1:19 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterTex

Tex Fischer for President.

Sick Bruins jersey man. It almost makes me not despise them as much. Almost.

BTW Chara is now a suspect of a criminal investigation for that disgusting hit.

Go Habs Go.

Mar 10 · 4:28 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDurfee

@tex,
where do you get your templates? I have found the shoulder yoke V-neck one, but can't for the life of me find the lace-up neck one, let alone the full sleeve stripes one.

Mar 10 · 11:22 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterColin

The islanders one is terrible. Everyone is upset with how dumb the ducks wordmark looks so why should I be impressed with this one? The jersey is nice just the logo needs to be a logo not a wordmark.

Mar 11 · 6:56 AM PST | Unregistered Commentergreener

@ Colin

Here is a link to my templates

https://picasaweb.google.com/texfischer/Templates#

Hope you found them helpful, the arms one is self made. I originally got theses templates from HJC.

Mar 11 · 8:43 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterTex

Love The Chicago design!! The Brunis on looks great too!! And Durfee please keep your comments about the criminal charges being brought up on Chara (which is absurd) to a Habs blog will you?

Mar 12 · 11:23 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDEE EM

I really love that Islanders jersey, the only thing I would change is the logo. I just don't think the text logo is big enough to fit well on a jersey. But overall that's a very sharp jersey.
