0027: Green-a-thon Freak Out

There seems to be a sense that concepts featured in a Freak Out Friday post are somehow a bad thing. I want to change that. It was never my intention to make it seem as though work featured here was anything other than perhaps a bit outlandish. Different. Sometimes in a good way.

For the next three Fridays, I'm going to feature the imaginative work of Ross Taylor, whose excellent logo design skills have been featured in the IceHL Project. His goal with this series of NHL concepts was to take history and put it in a blender. First up is the Minnesota Wild Stars — an obvious combination of Minnesota's NHL teams, the North Stars and Wild. It's unusual to say the least and I can guarantee you nothing like it will ever see action in the NHL. But even if it is a little freaky, it's still pretty cool.

Green-a-thon Week wraps up tomorrow with a St. Patrick's Day edition of Winter Classic Weekends. Then I think we'll focus on some other colors for a while.

It's a great concept idea, and the shirt itself fits into FOF for sure. However, is it only me that see's a Xmas tree on the top of the N, under the star. That bit is freaking me out, as I can't work out why that would be in the logo.

Really like this concept. The twisting path or whatever it is that forms the underside of the N makes the logo look slightly wonky, but otherwise this is fantastic. Would love to see Minnesota drop the Christmas themed jerseys and go back to the North Stars scheme, and this is a very good take on it.

I would buy this jersey in a heartbeat. The combination of the two logos is perfect and blends seamlessly. Good job Ross.

The logo may need to be tweaked but the overall design and color scheme is great. The "Wild" needs to be incorporated into the logo better.

Best concept design since the new Concepts Forum was created. Good job incorporating facets of the current Wild logo and playing to the 'throwback' design of the North Stars.

One of the best concepts I've ever seen.

The combination of logos is quite cool...maybe if they host Dallas in a future Winter Classic they could do something kind of like that, just scaled down a bit?

Chris, what about making Freak Out Fridays have a different color star rating system? More of a "Freak Out Scale", where the concept is rated from 1-5 on how freaked out the concept is rather than rating the design itself from 1-5. I know that's more work for you, but just a thought.

Looks fantastic, I'd like to see just a little touch of red in there, perhaps as accenting (sleeves, star outline)...

I saw when he posted this another concept forum and most of his other concepts are amazing. But this one was one of my favorites.

I love this. I especially like that the clever little details of the Wild logo have been kept, like the river, trees, etc.
The only negative I have is that the logo is an N and wouldn't fit with the current Minnesota Wild brand. If you can keep the logo exactly the same (same W shape with the tree under the star and the river as the opening) but make it an M instead of an N, it would be perfect. Just extent it under the "tree" to make it an M and this concept would be perfect. This way the Wild could use it as their actual jersey and it would be excellent (the Wild really need to focus on green as their primary color and dial down the red, in my opinion).

Overall, tremendous work, love it.
