In this week of featuring some of Icethetics' most prolific concept designers, we come to an artists who's been submitting work to the site for as long as I can remember. And he's always thinking outside the box. First up, he's got a Flyers concept inspired by the first third jersey of their in-state rival, the Penguins.
After the Coyotes unveiled their third jersey in 2008, they posted some of the unused logo designs that were considered. Brian borrows one of those logos for his Phoenix concept.
Finally, it's not the first time we've seen the Penguins in blue, and it almost surely won't be the last. But with the '90s logo? That's a bit out of place. But it makes for a very cool (pun!) sweater design.

i like the 90s penguin logo in blue like that, but don't like the side panels and design of the sweater. you are on to something though.
love the phx concept. the off white works well for them being surrounded by desert, and all.
Love the Flyers concept.
Not sure about how well it would look on the ice, but it could be a killer at retail.
Ah, Brian, another top concept artist on the site. His always-great designs will inspire jersey enthusiasts for years to come.
I immediately noticed the allusion to this jersey in the first one; and of course, I think it's awesome. Albeit the original will always be the best jersey of all time in my opinion, this is a nice nod. It's not quite as asymmetrical (as you can see the original was more in the sleeves), but this is a good take on it if the Flyers ever wore something like it. I particularly like how the logo works with the horizontal stomach stripes, that's clever that it works the way the Pens logo did. And finally, the gradient orange. Gradients haven't been used to often, only other ones I can remember besides the Pens jersey I compared are these two Canucks sweaters; which were not only coincidental enough to be used by the same team, but they were both alternates as well (though something as crazy as gradients would be on an alt jersey). And I have to say, I'm a fan of gradients. They're a unique and 90's-esque look, they should have been used more often. Wondering if they're even possible on an Edge jersey, I'd love to see a team they their mitts at one.
The second one is cool. One of my favorite parts about the old Coyotes identity is that it was more location-inspired; it felt more "desert-y", which provided one of the most unique looks in NHL history, and personally one of my absolute favorites. The hem stripe pattern, the beautiful color palette (they should have never dropped orange, green, black and purple), and that sick alternate jersey; they all screamed the hot deserts of Arizona. I'm surely hope they return to this classic look one day; and I'm saddened they didn't use that logo. The current identity is more simple and less Arizona-esque (albeit the colors convey it enough, the old ones do it a lot better, while having 90's written all over it), but it's good. They could use this kind of thing for a semi-throwback (fauxback?). Other than that, this would be a good idea for another alternate; they could work with a sand jersey.
Ah, there's that beauty of a logo again. Though I never imagined it being used with the old Pens colors. Though I'm probably biased, I really like this. The striping pattern is better than what they have now (kinda recycled on the current sens and 2007-08 Lightning), anything unique is an improvement. I'd like to see a white version of this, they could even use this for the winter classic. All hail the 90's Pens logo!
Not a fan of the Philly jersey. Looks like the atrocious Buffalo Bandits of the NLL, with the fading colours.
The Phoenix jersey is sweet, but I can only see the logo as a P with someone giving the finger in the middle.
But the Penguins jersey. Wow. I would buy one of those. I am not a fan of the blue jerseys they keep coming out with, but this one is awesome. Loving it big time.
I like the Penguin concept. It reminds me of Crosby's Rimouski Oceanic jersey a bit.
@Ryan You do notice that their recent blue jerseys are nods to the inaugural-1980 colors? They were a blue team until Pittsburgh became the dubbed "city of champions". The local pro teams, the Steelers and Pirates had then been winning a lot, not without a handful of championships in the 70's. Their two colors at the time were black and gold (as well as now). Pittsburgh wore blue and light blue up to that point, and so in hopes of gaining the success the other two teams had, the Pens made a color swap of their late-70's jerseys from light blue/blue to black/yellow, and they used that wonderful color scheme up until 2002, when their than-alternate, which was the shade of gold it is today, became the away, and a white version became the home, and you know the rest.
Agh, I just had a little rant again there, didn't I?
Ya I know about the blue things. But I hate that it's back. I really don't like it. I rather them in yellow/black.
Flyers jersey based on the old Penguins frankenjersey with Canucks-style gradients? It's a cool concept, but something that should never actually be produced. It's something like what you might see from the Flyers' AHL affiliate on a Halloween-themed night.
Love the Coyotes concept, although I'm really not crazy about that logo. Now, that's a logo the team actually designed and not the designer so I don't hold that against him. If any team was gonna come out with a non-white light-colored jersey, this jersey should be it (except with the primary logo).
Something about that Penguins jersey bothers me. Not sure if it's the combination of different eras or what, but that just looks weird. Also, the striping combined with that logo makes for a jersey with WAY too many straight lines.
@ Nascar, did you know that the Pittsburgh Pirates Hockey Club (circa 1925-1930) were the very first professional sports team in Pgh to don the city's colors of Black/Yellow Gold! The Pirates Baseball Club wore red/white/blue and dem Stillers weren't even born til 1933! Did you also know that during the 5yr stretch of time the Boston Bruins wore brown/yellow gold...thats why when Boston protested the Pens color change they lost due to Pgh Pirates Hockey Club using it

The Flyers concept has the lowest votes but is the best one of the three. One of the best I've seen on this site in months. The sleeves are great.
As for the striping, I would add a fourth stripe for the bottom wing, and I'd have the right stripe start under the round P. It's just unusual that the top aligns with the logo but not the bottoms. The two would be different heights in the back - but they could fade into the orange when they got to the numbers.
The other two don't compare. Different striping, different color panels, but there's nothing outside the box.
@Pensfan Oh yeah, I knew about the old hockey Pirates; I forgot about that. There was also a Pittsburgh Pirates in the NFL before they were called the Steelers, though I'm almost 100% sure you'd know that. :P
Also, the Bruins protested in the very same matter during the 1979-80 season when the Penguins, after 13 years of wearing mostly blue, switching their palette to black and gold, the Bruins then-color scheme. They protested that they had exclusive rights to said color scheme (despite the fact that Vancouver was wearing those black, yellow and red "V" jerseys at the time). The Pens did point out the colors were worn by the old Pirates and ultimately prevailed. Though Boston got their revenge and eliminated them in the playoffs that year. But the Pens didn't give up, they would have their voice heard wearing those classic sweaters when they won two Stanley's in a row with 'em.
Honestly, all Pittsburgh teams should wear the same shade of gold along with black. Not that I hate Vegas gold, it look pretty slick on the Pens' 2002-2007 jerseys; it's just that I'd rather have it go back to the way it used to be. Yeah the Pens 2002-present identity just screams modern, but I really want them to go back to the old gold, to match with their NFL and MLB teams. I'd be happy with it, and I'm sure you would to. We can only hope.
@ Nascar, No Doubt! Pittsburgh used to be unique in the way that all 3 professional sports teams used the same black/yellow gold color scheme, I too want the yellow gold back in the Pens uniforms(skating Penguin of course). The '02-'07 unis were nice because the gold was shiny but like I said before, the RBK Beige/Khaki is an exact shade match to my St. Johns Bay Khaki dress pants, so are my dress pants gold colored or is RBK using khaki?? LOL! I'm not big on College Football but would LOVE to see PITT go back to the 80's uniforms (script logo on helmet as well)!
