0618: Isles & Flames

It's Sunday and that brings another Islanders concept. How about this one from Brendan Nashman inspired by the old New York Americans? And since today is unveiling day for the Calgary Flames' third jersey...

...I had to sneak this one in from Brian Brideau. He took the leaked shoulder patch and created an entire uniform design around it. I think it's actually really cool. What about you? Better or worse than the actual jersey they're unveiling today?

0611: A Bridge to Orange

Another week, another Islanders Sunday. This one brings a rather orange jersey from Matt Madore. The Isles wouldn't look too bad in these colors. Or is it just me?

0604: Brooklyn Black and White

As promised, Islanders Sunday starts this week. After two months of Seattle concepts, I wanted a place to showcase some of the intriguing Isles concepts that have been showing up in my inbox since the Brooklyn move was announced.

Justin Wiltron is first up. Naturally, we had to start with a black and white one, but don't worry, this new theme won't just be a repository for monochromatic musings. We'll get plenty of blue and orange in here as well. There's some really neat ideas in store.

0588: Freak Outs by Ryan Yuck

Our theme week continues into this Freak Out Friday with the guy you might call the King of Freak Outs. Ryan Yuck's tendency toward the unfamiliar can be jarring at times. You could never call his work bad, but it's definitely out there. Like this re-imagining of the Islanders' fisherman jersey — without the fisherman or the wavy stripes.

Here he merges the Canucks with the old Vancouver Millionaires. It's a strange idea for a hockey sweater, yet there's something about it you can't help but like. Maybe it's the green.

Speaking of green, Ryan's Wild concept takes a little inspiration from the Minnesota club that preceded it — the North Stars. His work is definitely creative and worth taking the time to look at, but I'm not sure I'd necessarily want to see it on NHL ice. What do you think?

0580: This Way to Brooklyn

Earlier this week we heard from the Islanders regarding their uniforms for their impending move to Brooklyn. They said the blues and whites will remain the same but a new third jersey is on the horizon. So that validates all the silly black-and-white numbers I've been posting on Freak Out Fridays for the last several months. This one from Matt Andersen is another that made me chuckle.

0560: Yankee Stadium Preview

This Stadium Series concept by Bastian Schmülling sort of walks the line of a Freak Out Friday, doesn't it? It's really sharp, but how many Islanders fans would support putting teal back in the uniform?

0559: Freak Out Flashback II

Two Freak Out Fridays ago, I shared a couple of concepts from my childhood — proving that my fascination with this part of hockey goes back a very long way. But enough of you were amused by my scribblings that I thought I'd offer up another set. I wouldn't call this a concept, though, so much as a hand drawing of the Islanders' fisherman jersey. As a kid, I thought it was the coolest thing. Now? Well, let's just say my tastes have changed somewhat.

I'm sure you're wondering what in the world this is. My youngest brother Mark, who was eight years old at the time, was captivated by the two newest teams in the NHL — the Hurricanes and Predators. So much so that he created a Franken-jersey, mixing the two together. Unfortunately, he did it backwards because I would've been more interested the saber-toothed hurricane (Syfy movie idea!) than whatever this is. But cut him some slack. It was a lot of years ago.
