I hate this new template, it looks ridiculos. Why did you change it from the last template?
@nucks fan: That's some thoughtful feedback. Anyway, sorry to hear that. I wanted something that was simpler and more stylized. It was never my intent to try to emulate actual jersey shapes. I just didn't realize that at first. Other sites have that type of thing covered already.
My goal here was to create a basic form that I could apply any jersey design to, without worrying about whether it's a Reebok Edge or an old CCM template. I also didn't want to have to deal with all the specific fonts for the names and numbers, hence no backs. These things all held me up in getting the Galleries off the ground because of the limited time I have to work on them.
Hope you come around on the new look. It'll definitely allow me to get more leagues and teams represented here.
They look like drink coasters!
Not sure if jerseys, or Christmas ornaments...
Are you going to share this template? Like the PSD? I have an idea for something to exist in the real world.
I actually really enjoy the new template! Although certainly not traditional, it's able to capture the essence of the designs quite well. And yes, they would make sweet drink coasters :)
@Chris: Sorry for sounding so harsh and also thanks for answering my question. I understand not including the backs and also the desire to only have one template, but couldn't you have used a template that actually looked like a jersey like your last template? Really the only thing on you last template that gave away whether it was a Reebok Edge jersey or a CCM jersey was the hem, and I think a hem with only a slight curve could work for both. Also it seems like some elements get lost on this template, like the Flames side panels or the piping and victory stripes on the Lightning's third jersey.
But even if I don't like this new template, I still appreciate all the work you do with this site, and I do like the fact that you'll be able to do more leagues.
@nucks fan: Thanks for that. I'll admit this design isn't perfect by any stretch. It may not even be ideal. The side panels are hidden by the sleeves with this template. But in fairness, the victory stripes were never visible on the previous template because the arms were positioned down to the sides.
All I know is this design demonstrates the key elements of a jersey — particularly the logos and striping. It gives you an overall sense of the jersey design in an uncluttered way. It also speeds up the process of cranking out graphics — and there are a lot of graphics to crank out.
I very much appreciate your feedback and hope that in time the new look will grow on everyone. (Or that I can come up with a better/easier idea to implement!)
@Chris
When the Ducks stadium jersey appeared at the top of the screen, the first of the your new template-jerseys, I thought it was a goof on Getzlaf looking fat in the preview picture. I got a good laugh. Scrolling down I thought, "wait, is he doing this for all the stadium jerseys?" Then "uh oh, he's changing them all to this". Finally, clicking on one and seeing the backs were no longer visible rounded out the disappointment.
Now I'm all for artistic experimentation. And as I've said before if you did something I found not to my taste, it's your site and your time - you should be able to do what you want with it. Hey you're adding a free resource here for us all to enjoy after all.
But I have some thoughts for you to consider.
1) You've stated you believe the new template demonstrates the key elements of a jersey and I have to disagree. Sure the colors logos etc are present, but to not appear on a jersey shape ignores the basic structure of the design. It's like having a gallery of national flags represented by triangles. It works to demonstrate the general feel, but it's no longer a jersey representation. (Side note, they really would make awesome coasters - you should market them!).
2) While sites like NHLUniforms.com are a great resource for painstakingly accurate jersey histories, faithful readers still come to your site for features just like this. I'm sure there's room for experimentation without undermining what makes the site useful to them (not to be harsh - see point 1 regarding when a jersey gallery isn't a jersey gallery anymore).
3) This was originally something unique that could not be found on any other site. The jersey gallery in photos. That was amazing. Requires no fonts or templates, just good photos. I really miss it. Can we go back to that?
@Tyfighter77: Thanks for the feedback! I would disagree that it the new template doesn't look like a jersey. (Also disagree with your triangle flag analogy — though I'd be fascinated to see something like that as an art project.) It might be a little on the abstract side, but it does have all the key elements (collar, sleeves, etc.) needed to evoke the look of a hockey sweater.
As you pointed out, NHLUniforms.com (and even SportsLogos.net) have detailed drawings, so I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. I recognize the world needs the wheel, of course, but there are other ways to get around. Before I take that analogy too far, let me just say that what you see today is not my final vision for the galleries.
You mentioned you liked the game photos in the previous gallery. So did I! That's why I set up the original gallery in the first place. Part of why I set up this circle-shaped template is to be able to use it as a frame. The same way you could click to show the back of a jersey, you'll eventually be able to click to display a variety of action photos within the round frame. (Same style as before.)
But that's something for down the road. Given that I work a full time job, I'm always looking for ways to economize my time working on Icethetics. To get the most out of it. The new template helps me build graphics in less time than before. It may not be as faithful to actual jersey shapes, but I believe it will offer more usefulness in time.
I hope I don't come off as defensive in any these responses. I want honest feedback from you guys and I'm glad you're giving it. But hearing that some of you are disappointed with the changes, I just want to make sure you know it's all for the best — at least in my mind. I know I can't please everyone, but I can at least try not to disappoint everyone.
@Chris
Great answers and well put. I'm very excited the photos are still in the future, those were so great. And I have to admit, with all the jerseys now done in the circle template, I'm having a much easier time seeing the 'jerseys'. Honestly I quite like the design, I was just disappointed to see them replace the jersey template. Well, thanks for all the great work as usual.
Why am I laughing at this template?
Not trying to hate on it or anything, the way ir looks just makes me laugh.
I can appreciate the convenience behind this new template however, compared to the one you replaced, it just isn't the same. As always, you have done a phenomenal job with the templates and this website but that old template was awesome. To see the actual design of the jerseys as clear as they are is awesome and much better than the other sites. Since this template is easier to work with, I think it would be a perfect way to get all the designs on here and once they are on here then, when you have got the time of course, then, you could redo all the designs as actual jerseys. That way, all the designs can be added much quicker and you can still redo them to the old template once you get the chance. By the way, I am really glad that you are keeping the live action photos of the jerseys. That and these new galleries make this site even better.
Being able to view the backs of the jerseys were by far my favourite part of this page. If it ain't broken, don't fix it! I'm not saying you can't apply this new template to other leagues (no matter how much I dislike it), but if you already did the work on the NHL, AHL and ECHL jerseys including their backs, why take it away? Extremely disappointing, especially considering I know you already put all of that time into them for nothing. The new template will really only result in me visiting this page far less often, if at all. But of course, I'm just one person
@R: Thanks for the compliments and for understanding. If there was a way I could turn Icethetics into a full time job, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
@Leafers: Sorry to see you go. For the record, it was "broken." It was just broken behind the scenes. I replaced the old version for continuity's sake. I didn't see the point in leaving it on the site since it will no longer be updated and no future galleries will be produced in that format. Also, I disagree that it was all for nothing. It was a great idea but it showed me the limits of what I can get done here. (I did say when I launched it that it was pretty ambitious.)
As "Guess Who" mentioned in his comment, these would make awesome drink coasters.
Hey Chris, just noticed that you missed blue/white at the end of the sleeves on the Leafs jerseys.
Just wondering why the stadium series hem stripes are rounded, while all the other hem stripes are straight?
I don't understand why people are hating on this style so much, I love it! Very different and fun!
I agree that the typical jersey mock up is already covered everywhere else, this is unique and really lets me appreciate the striping and details more than I've noticed elsewhere.
I can't wait to see more!
@IRONMAN I am assuming because of the template they used for the Stadium Series; it is different than the regular Edge template.
@CHRIS I am actually digging this look! I didn't think I liked it at a first glance, but I enjoy it. I feel you are correct...it does show all of the key jersey elements. Add the "action shots" with it, and it's perfect! Keep up the good work, and thank you!
@IRONMAN I believe the hem striping on the stadium series jerseys are rounded because they are on the very bottom of the jersey, and since this template is rounded so are the hem stripes, unlike the other jerseys where the hem striping is raised above the bottom.
This template frikkin rocks! Cool dudes!
Oh, these aren't particularly nice looking at all. I think I'll go to NHLUniforms.com for jersey reference, though. It's your site, do what you want, of course, but I actually used the previous galleries for reference. Now, these, well, I don't know what they are.
For example: Chicago Stadium Series has a "Smile" of hem stripes, while the New Jersey one doesn't. I don't know what I'm really looking at, and so it kinda defeats the purpose.
But, hey, it's your cake.
I hope it goes back to the way it used to be after the "holiday" season is up
Well, these are kind of neat and give a stylized general idea..... but on a site where people discuss things like shoulder yoke angles and other such details, a reference that more closely resembles the actual jersey would probably be better. I was almost expecting to be able to click on the coasters and get a pop-up of a more traditional-style picture.
These would make great drink coasters or hockey pucks. Man would I love to see that.
I think the new template design is really cool! I feel like by making the jersey one shape (a circle) the elements of the jersey (stripes, logo, colors) stand out over the form. It's also a hell of a space saver, since negative space between sleeves and torso is a space killer.
It's different, I like it, and I wish I could get those Flyers ones as Christmas tree ornaments! (Coasters was also a good idea).
Yo Chris, I have a question, how come some jersey's have rounded stripes at the the bottom while some do not? The only logical explanation I could think of is that the rounded stripes touch the bottom of their jersey, but the is inconsistent with Canuck's heritage jersey. IMO, they should all be straight regardless if it touches the bottom of the jersey.
@Dannzo, et al: Regarding the difference in striping, it all goes back to the team's own designs. Most jerseys have straight, horizontal stripes. A few, however, have stripes or piping that follows the curved hem of the Reebok Edge jersey template. Take a look at teams like the Blue Jackets, Flames and Kings. You'll find piping along the bottom hem. If I made those stripes straight on my round template, they'd be barely visible. So I chose to follow the hem on my template as well, even though it's far more pronounced.
I will admit I should probably revisit this technique on the Blackhawks and Penguins Stadium Series jerseys. When there are that many stripes, it would be easy to make them straight. Plus, the Stadium Series jerseys have a straight hem (it only angles upwared on the sides, a line the stripes do follow).
To all, thanks for the compliments and criticisms on the new look. I take them in equal measure. And I'll try to take them into account going forward. All I can promise is that the process starts and ends with what I can make work feasibly.
Some have complained they can no longer use these galleries as a "reference." I wanted to address that. You shouldn't. Again, there are sites that already focus solely on displaying graphics with great accuracy. That's not what I'm trying to do here. I just want something fun to look at that can re-introduce the photography element. (Again, coming soon!)
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Also, when the fervor over the new design subsides, I will likely generate a fresh page for this gallery. Too many of the comments are focused on the design of the page rather than the design of the jerseys and I'd rather that not be the legacy of the page. That's all for now.
In all honesty Chris, I applaud you for trying a new template and stepping out of the norm - if I wanted accurate images, I'd check out the myriad of options already available.
That said, I'm afraid I agree with most everyone else when these look like Beanie Ball toys and are a little hard to take seriously.
On the flip side, it was also mentioned that these look like coasters; which I would buy in a heartbeat!
You get an A for effort, but I'm not to into this format. Jerseys are not round.
Not being able to see the backs of the designs really leaves out some of the design elements, like the Hurricanes extended shoulder yoke. On the bright side it makes some jerseys look better, like the sabres third. Not sure I like the rounded template but I'm getting used to it. And I really really want pucks that look like this! I think they would sell very well!!
this template looks far too childish.
I like the new template. Good for quick reference and comparison's. I agree with Kris K. above that it makes some Jersey's look better! Even the one's I do not like, look cool in this format.
Very sorry Chris, but the new templates... just no. I can't decide if these are coasters, or beanbags with jerseys. Sorry Chris.
@Chris Thanks for the reply btw. Forgot to tell you that I actually like the new templates, a couple days ago I printed the Toronto Maple Leafs home jersey out and made a laminated (with scotch tape) cardboard coaster out of it haha.
Actually, on second thought, this template is growing on me, now I actually like it! Great work!
That template actually looks kinda cool. Be nice to have coasters or poker chips printed up like that.
For the record, I do not care for the new templates. NHL jerseys should look like...NHL jerseys. I must concur with Nucksfan - they look ridiculous.
why so much hate? these are just representations of the current team jerseys. as far as i can tell they are not meant to be accurate designs. if you want to see those check out the "Resources" sidebar. why copy something exactly as someone else has and you have access to at a click of your mouse. just chill boys and girls. Chris... great job, love the fatties ;-)
old templete was much better
Hey Chris--
Don't let a couple haters get you down on this stylized template. I actually think it's original and unique, and doesn't detract from the jersey designs at all. They remind me of the old cardboard Pogs. These would be really cool as poker chips or challenge coins.
You should go back to the game shots you had before, they were awesome. Sorry, but these are terrible.
You know what, I'm actually really starting to like these. I guess they just take a bit of time to get used to. Can't wait to see more leagues!
